The Little Mermaid:
Max, the Dog
In the cartoon movie, Prince Eric has a mop dog called Max. As we had a large and talented turnout for auditions, the director was reticent to turn anyone away and decided to create as many tracks and roles as possible for the students.
Max, the dog, was created using latch hook technique, and because it was a labor intensive job, nearly every member of the 40-person cast spent at least 20 minutes working on it during the rehearsal process. A few dedicated students spent hours helping with it, but everyone wanted to try it, and it brought a lot of new volunteers into the shop, many of whom stayed and learned other skills. We even took it with us to KCACTF, so we could continue to work on it throughout the festival week.
I probably would create it with a little bit less coverage (more spacing between the knots) if I were to do this type of application again, for both better ventilation (actor's comfort) and to make the labor more manageable, but it had a wonderful effect that kids and adults in the audience loved.
